The Legal Requirement

AS/NZS 2293 requires that exit signs and emergency lights in commercial buildings be tested every six months. The six-monthly test includes a functional check, confirming each fitting illuminates on simulated mains failure. Annually, a 90-minute discharge test must be carried out to confirm battery capacity.

Records of all testing must be kept and made available to building inspectors and relevant authorities on request. The obligation sits with the building owner or the owners corporation for strata properties.

What the Testing Involves

We attend the property and test each emergency and exit fitting individually. The test involves interrupting the mains supply to the fitting and confirming it illuminates from the internal battery. We check the battery condition, the lamp, and the fitting housing.

Fittings that fail the test are documented and we advise on replacement. Where the fitting can be repaired, battery replacement, lamp replacement, we carry out the repair on the spot where stock permits.

Annual 90-Minute Discharge Test

Once per year, the testing standard requires a full 90-minute discharge test to verify that batteries can sustain illumination for the required duration. We carry out this test as part of the annual maintenance visit, typically combining it with the six-monthly functional test to minimise attendance costs.

Replacement and Upgrades

Emergency fittings have a service life, batteries typically need replacement every four to five years regardless of test results. Older fittings with fluorescent lamps are commonly replaced with modern LED emergency fittings that offer better reliability, lower energy consumption, and longer battery life. We quote replacements at the time of testing.

Record Keeping

We provide a written testing register on completion of each visit, documenting each fitting tested, the test result, and any remedial action taken or required. This register serves as your compliance record and should be retained on site.
