What Test and Tagging Is
Test and tagging is the inspection and electrical testing of portable appliances, anything with a plug and a cord. The process involves a visual inspection of the cable, plug, and appliance, followed by an electrical test using a PAT (portable appliance tester) that checks earth continuity, insulation resistance, and polarity.
Each item that passes is tagged with a label showing the test date, the retest date, and the name of the tester. Items that fail are removed from service.
Who Needs It
Victorian workplace health and safety regulations require employers to ensure electrical equipment is safe. For most workplaces, test and tagging is the practical way to demonstrate compliance. It is mandatory on construction sites under the relevant safety standards.
Schools, aged care facilities, childcare centres, offices, hospitality venues, and commercial kitchens are among the premises where we regularly carry out test and tagging programs. Strata managers also engage us for common area appliances and building equipment.
Testing Intervals
The required interval between tests depends on the type of environment and the type of equipment. AS/NZS 3760 sets out the schedule, construction sites require more frequent testing than a standard office environment.
We advise on the correct interval for your premises at the time of the first visit and schedule return visits accordingly. We can also manage the program on your behalf so you do not need to track retest dates yourself.
RCD Testing
We test RCDs (residual current devices) as part of test and tagging programs or as a standalone service. This includes push-button testing and trip-time testing using a calibrated tester. RCD testing is required on construction sites and recommended in all commercial premises on a regular basis.
Records and Reporting
We provide a written register of all items tested, the test results, and the next due date. This register is your compliance record and should be retained on site. We can provide records in a format that suits your existing safety management system.
