What the Electrical Work Involves

Electric hot water systems require a dedicated circuit from the switchboard — typically a 20-amp circuit for storage systems. We run the circuit, fit the appropriate isolator at the unit, and connect the system.

Where the existing switchboard has no spare capacity or does not have the correct circuit breaker size, we advise on the options before proceeding. A switchboard upgrade or the addition of a sub-board is sometimes required.

Off-Peak and Controlled Load Tariffs

Many electric storage hot water systems in Melbourne are wired to an off-peak or controlled load tariff, the system heats overnight when electricity is cheaper. This requires specific wiring from the switchboard and registration with the network operator.

We carry out the electrical work and advise on the process for registering the off-peak connection with your energy retailer. If your system is currently on a controlled load circuit and that circuit has failed, we diagnose and restore it.

Emergency Hot Water

A failed hot water system is not always an electrical problem. We confirm whether the circuit is live and delivering power to the unit, then test the element and thermostat. If the electrical supply and components are sound and the unit is still not working, we advise accordingly — at that point a plumber or the manufacturer is required.
