Why a Proper Installation Matters
Connecting a portable generator directly to your home's wiring without a changeover switch is dangerous, it can back-feed power into the network, creating a live hazard for anyone working on the lines during an outage. It is also illegal.
A correctly installed generator inlet and changeover switch isolates your property from the network before connecting the generator supply. This protects network workers, your appliances, and the generator itself.
What We Install
A generator inlet socket, a heavy-duty weatherproof outlet, is mounted at a convenient external location. A manual changeover switch at the switchboard ensures the mains supply is isolated before the generator input is connected.
The changeover switch typically feeds a sub-board or a selection of priority circuits, the loads you want powered during an outage. We discuss your requirements at the quote stage to determine which circuits to include.
Whole-House vs Priority Circuits
A portable generator is rarely large enough to power an entire household simultaneously. The practical approach is to select priority circuits, refrigerator, lighting, some power points, medical equipment, and feed those from the generator while leaving high-load circuits such as electric hot water, ovens, and air conditioning off. We design the changeover arrangement accordingly.
Commercial and Industrial Applications
For commercial premises where continuity of power is critical, cold storage, medical, data, manufacturing, a fixed standby generator with an automatic transfer switch is a more appropriate solution. We quote these installations and coordinate with generator suppliers.
